Description:       Tensor Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement (SUMMA) Grants support projects designed to encourage the pursuit and enjoyment of mathematics by students who are members of groups historically underrepresented in the field. Projects may be designed for middle school students, high school students, or college or university students.

Eligible projects must provide enrichment activities that involve students actively doing mathematics. Essential components of a project include activities that increase participants’ interest in and appreciation for mathematics, encourage students to continue mathematics studies in high school and college, better prepare them for those studies, and provide awareness of career opportunities in mathematics and mathematically intensive disciplines. Mentoring is encouraged, and undergraduate and graduate students may serve as role models and work directly with middle and high school students, under the tutelage of faculty from both the college or university and middle or high school.

Eligible applicants are college or university mathematics or science faculty integrally involved in a proposed project. If a project includes high school or middle school participants, there must be collaboration with high school or middle school mathematics faculty. Projects may replicate existing successful projects, adapt components of such projects, or be innovative. Funds may be used to supplement existing projects in order to increase the number of minority student participants. Project design should reflect effective strategies for increasing underrepresented minority achievement. A match is required. Complete applications must be submitted using the online system.
