Description: The Simons Foundation awards Targeted Grants in Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MPS) for high-risk projects of exceptional promise and scientific importance in the areas of theoretical mathematics, physical sciences, and computer science. Allowable expenses include research equipment, experiments, computations, and other costs directly related to the research; domestic or international travel for the principal investigator (PI) and coinvestigators; one month of summer salary intended as supplemental; and benefits such as tuition support for staff/research scientist and associates. Grant funding may extend up to five years.
Eligible applicants are established US and foreign public and private educational institutions and stand-alone research centers. PIs and coinvestigators must hold a PhD and a tenure track or tenured position at the affiliated institution or center at the time of application. There are no citizenship or department requirements for PIs. The application process requires an initial Letter of Intent (LOI), with submission instructions provided on the website. Applicants are notified within two months and based on the LOI may be invited to submit a full proposal, with decisions on full proposals made within three months of receipt.
