Description:        The purpose of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Traineeship Program is to build institutional capacity to implement comprehensive, evidence-based, innovative, and interdisciplinary traineeship models in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs. Expectations are to support graduate and doctoral students to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of careers in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM). High priority research areas are artificial intelligence, quantum information science and engineering, and NSF’s “10 Big Ideas.” Proposals are accepted in Track 1 or Track 2 based on the institution’s research activity level.

Eligible applicants are US accredited institutions of higher education that award research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in STEM disciplines supported by NSF. Applications are encouraged from Minority-Serving Institutions, including Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions, Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. Strategic collaborations are encouraged with the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, national laboratories, field stations, teaching and learning centers, informal science centers, and academic partners. There is a special interest in partnerships with organizations participating in the NSF Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES) Program. Cost sharing and matching funds are not required. Applications must be submitted online.
