*TOMODACHI typically awards grants in the range of $5,000-$80,000 per program, but all funding decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. The applicant pool is very competitive, and TOMODACHI encourages serious applications to contact tomodachigrants@usjapancouncil.org well in advance of the submission deadline to discuss the application process.

**For 2017, TOMODACHI is particularly interested in programs with a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) focus, as well as programs that help prepare young women for careers in STEM or business fields

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Organizations submitting funding proposals must include proof of 501(c)(3) status (U.S. organizations) or non-profit status (Japanese organizations) with their application.
  • The TOMODACHI Initiative will not fund individuals, only institutions.

The TOMODACHI Initiative will not consider proposals for the following:

  • Programs with target participant group over the age of 35;
  • Programs for commercial (profit-making) purposes;
  • Political activities, election campaigns, or religious activities;
  • Activities in support of specific doctrines or claims;
  • Programs that are centered only around tourism/travel (i.e. without leadership component)

 

Program Requirements

Alignment with TOMODACHI Mission and Vision

  • Connect the United States and Japan
  • Develop future young leaders in the United States and Japan

Potential for Meaningful Impact

  • Provide programs that span the continuum of cross-cultural youth leadership development, from exposure and inspiration to learning, leadership development, and alumni engagement
  • Expose underserved communities to foreign cultures
  • Bring new and diverse voices to the U.S.-Japan relationship
  • Offer life-transforming opportunities for high potential youth
  • Address a need or tackle a challenge in an underserved area (geographic, demographic, social, sector)

 

Application Process

After carefully reviewing eligibility and program requirements (above), applicants should complete the following documents and email them to: [email protected]

To be considered, applicants must submit the following forms:

1. TOMODACHI Initiative Application Form

2. Itemized Budget

3. Names, titles, and resumes of all staff who would help develop and implement the program.

4. Proof of organization’s non-profit status (501(c)(3) or Japanese documentation)

*All application materials must be in English and all financial figures/budget items should be in the currency in which you would like to receive the funds (i.e. Yen or Dollars)

 

Supplementary Documentation

TOMODACHI will collect the following supplementary information from successful grant applicants in order to process the funds transfer:

  • Signed Implementer Agreement between recipient organization and TOMODACHI;
  • Copy of recipient’s latest audited financial statement;
  • Current list of recipient organization’s Board of Directors and Advisors;
  • Bank account information for wire transfer of funds.

*Organizations that receive TOMODACHI funding must agree to adhere to guidelines for TOMODACHI logo usage

 

Reporting Requirements

Please be advised that grant recipients will be required to submit several additional items prior to program launch, during the program (depending on the length), and upon completion of the program. Grant recipients will receive specific instructions from their assigned TOMODACHI Program Manager in the form of Implementer Guidelines. Post-program reports will be due within sixty (60) days of the completion date of the program or by the date specific in the Implementer Agreement. Post-program reports must include – but not be limited to – the following:

  • Narrative Summary (TOMODACHI template will be provided);
  • Financial Summary (TOMODACHI template will be provided);
  • Participant Testimonials;
  • Photos;
  • Post-Program Participant Surveys (includes copies of both Implementer and TOMODACHI surveys).
